The Wolverhampton School of Art Graduate Showcase 2021 will highlight the work of final year students in Art, Design and Screen based subjects and will celebrate the innovation and resourcefulness of students’ work which has been created during the pandemic.

The showcase, which includes work by Class of 2021 graduating students from Fine Art & Photography, Fine Art Prizes, Gaming & Animation, Glass & Ceramics, Graphics and Illustration, Film, Media, TV and Journalism, Fashion and Textiles, Artsfest, 3D Design, Community Work and Foundation will take place on YouTube (as well as the School of Art Twitter account @wlv_soa) at 6.00 pm on Friday 25 June 2021.

Amanda Makhila, who has studied for an Interior Design degree course, worked on a concept born in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, focusing on homelessness and the need to re-integrate people back into society.

She said: "As an interior designer I am influenced by my background of living interchangeably between two continents. I have taken the best elements of these two cultures to inspire my designs, influence by nature, texture and colour. I seek to create a balance between sustainable, innovative approaches to achieve functionality and aesthetics, whilst maintaining a sense of place for my clients."

Aimee Hankey, who studied for a Graphic Design degree course and has been shortlisted for the Starpack Awards for her ‘spin the bottle’ styled drinking game for Cool Shots, said: “My design journey started as a child, spending time doing arts and crafts but as I progressed through college and then into university, I realised I was more intrigued and inspired by Graphic Design. I have a love for physical design and have developed a passion for print, materiality, and paper engineering, and I relish projects and briefs with physical outputs that audiences can interact with.

“The Graphic Design course at Wolverhampton School of Art has enabled me to progress immensely both as a person and designer; the lecturers are dedicated to student success. There have been many opportunities to work on live briefs to gain industry experience, and to explore a breadth of design disciplines and software.”

Jatinder Ghataora is also an Illustration degree student and is a comic book artist who narrates personal stories which draw from lived experience through his detailed, large scale, line drawings and prints. This year Jatinder completed his degree whilst shielding. During that time he has reflected on and documented the pandemic through a series of reportage illustrations whereby he documents public spaces and recreation grounds which are now being used as Covid-19 vaccination centres.

Jatinder said: It wasn’t just that people were dying but the manner, isolated and alone.

Maggie Ayliffe, Head of the School of Art, said: “The last year has undoubtedly been a huge challenge to students and staff in the School of Art. Our staff and students have been hugely inventive in finding opportunities and outlets to keep learning - and this is a testament to our creativity and resilience as a sector.

“We hope our graduate showcase will demonstrate how an art degree builds students’ confidence and skills like problem solving, communication, digital prowess and critical thinking that are so needed in the current world and society.”

Anyone looking to study at the University of Wolverhampton should register for one of our forthcoming Open Days.
