BUILD THE FUTURE – Kyle gets his house in order with Degree Apprenticeship

09/02/2021

“I’d recommend an Apprenticeship to anyone.  You see things you’re learning about right in front of you and it cements things in your head.”

Kyle Edwards, 22 from Erdington, has really got his house in order by studying for a Chartered Surveying Degree Apprenticeship at the University of Wolverhampton.

Kyle is a Construction Management Trainee at Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council who is funding his studies through the Apprenticeship Levy.

After studying for his GCSEs and A Levels, Kyle took a gap year before deciding whether he was going to go to University and he worked for two years. His family moved from London to the Midlands and they started to renovate their house which sparked his interest in property development and construction.

He applied for a Construction Management role at Dudley Council with the Housing Maintenance team where he focuses on scope of works, looking at materials and dealing with contractors as well as undertaking site visits to houses in the area checking works’ progress.

He said: “Studying for a Degree Apprenticeship was a no-brainer.  It meant that I could learn and earn at the same time. I was initially interested in Civil Engineering but I wanted my career to be more niche – I preferred the role of House Doctor.

“I noticed that there was a lot of housing development going on and there were building projects everywhere in the region. I knew that there would be lots of opportunities in the future with this kind of qualification under my belt.

“I get a massive amount of support from my employer and the modules on my course really relate to the type of work I’m doing. I see references in text books to the things I see on site and it’s really useful having expertise to tap into.

“I intend on working my way up and eventually I will look for other opportunities, not just domestic but maybe large scale developments, the construction industry offers a lot more than surveying but this Degree Apprenticeship will certainly open doors for me.

“I’d recommend an Apprenticeship to anyone.  You see things you’re learning about right in front of you and it cements things in your head.”
