Elaine Kasket: New Honorary Professor in Psychology
Recognising her many outstanding contributions to the fields of counselling and cyber-psychology, in addition to her pioneering work on digital legacies on social media, Dr Elaine Kasket has been awarded an honorary professorship in Psychology at the University of Wolverhampton.
Professor Kasket will be working closely with researchers in the Psychology Department’s Cyberpsychology research cluster (CRUW), which specialises in research focusing on psychological phenomena associated with new and emerging technology, such as the Internet and virtual reality.
Dr Chris Fullwood said: “We are delighted to welcome Professor Kasket to the University. She is widely regarded as the foremost expert in research investigating death and the digital. We are excited about collaborating with her on research and introducing our students to this fascinating area. Professor Kasket’s book ‘All the Ghosts in the Machine: The Digital Afterlife of your Personal Data’ should be essential reading for anyone interested in cyberpsychology.”
Published in 2019, the book addresses many challenging questions about what happens to our digital presence after we die, for example who should be able to access it, who has the right of control and ownership, and how does it affect the grieving process?
Using expertise derived from over a decade of study and research and dozens of interviews, ‘All the Ghosts in the Machine’ explores the topic of death in the digital age from all angles, taking the reader on a surprising and even mind-bending journey through the valley of the shadow of digital death.
Professor Kasket said: “I’m so pleased to have received this honour from the University of Wolverhampton, which further strengthens the connections that I’ve long enjoyed with the Cyberpsychology research cluster. I’m certain that my time with the University will be filled with creative, fruitful collaborations with both established and emerging scholars and practitioners.”
