To our Black students - we see you, we acknowledge you and we stand with you

Message from the Vice-Chancellor, Geoff Layer

The University of Wolverhampton will not tolerate racism or discrimination of any kind against any member of its student of staff community.

We are appalled at the horrific death of George Floyd - another senseless death amongst countless others all attributed to racial injustices. Over coming days the media may stop reporting on the global outcry for justice but we will never forget. We cannot underestimate the significant and lasting detrimental impact that racism has. As an inclusive organisation which supports the Black Lives Movement, we will continue to collaborate and proactively address racism to ensure long term change by educating ourselves, as well as working with our communities to educate themselves, on racial injustice.

Words can compel but it is actions that change so this message is only worth something if we walk the talk. We recognise as a University we are not perfect, as no organisation is, and we have to continually learn and improve in relation to the support we provide for our Black students. As such the University is working with students and staff to better identify racial disparities wherever they exist through its work on Race Equality Charter (REC) and will continue to do so – for the long game.

We ask all of our community to stand in solidarity with their Black friends, students and colleagues by supporting the Black Lives Matter Movement:-

We are your University and we are proud that you are our students - together we will fight this and together we will win the battle.

It is simple – Black Lives Matter.
