University thanks Council for student support in lockdown

Over 100 food parcels have been supplied to University of Wolverhampton students in need through a city food distribution scheme during the COVID-19 lockdown.

A total of 108 weekly food parcels were delivered to 22 students by the City of Wolverhampton Council team.

The students also received funding from the University’s Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund which supports students in the city who experience financial hardship.

The hardship fund was also extended to international students living in the city, including those who were unable to return home during the lockdown period.

Student Jose Marte Gomez said: ‘’During this difficult time, the support I have received from the University and the City of Wolverhampton Council has been much more than I had expected. I really feel the city and the University are looking after their citizens and students.’’

Professor Nazira Karodia, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Regional Engagement) said: “We were pleased to work with the City of Wolverhampton Council on this important initiative to provide food parcels for students in need in Wolverhampton.

“The University is supporting students who are experiencing financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic through our Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund and this was extended to our international students living in the city during these challenging times. The food parcels were a welcome addition to this and we would like to thank City of Wolverhampton Council for their support.”

Councillor Ian Brookfield, Leader of City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “We moved quickly to ensure that we could support the people of Wolverhampton through this pandemic, with the food distribution hub at Aldersley Leisure Village playing a key role in our response.

"More than 1.1 million meals have been delivered to residents across the city during the operation – weighing more than 500 tonnes - and we were delighted to be able to support students at the University of Wolverhampton in this way.”
