Research funding secured to look at risk management in construction
University of Wolverhampton researchers have secured funding to look at health and safety risk management on construction projects.
The £200,000 research project is funded by the European Union under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie research programme.
The research will focus on health and safety risks on construction projects and how they are most effectively managed in the pre-construction stages.
Issaka Ndekugri, Professor of Construction and Engineering Law in the University’s School of Architecture and Built Environment, who is leading the research project, said: “There is definitely room for improvement in the construction industry in terms of its record of fatalities and other serious accidents on construction projects.
“It is well-established that the seeds of accidents on construction sites are often sown by strategic procurement and design decisions made before work starts on site.
“The grant from the EU gives us the unique opportunity to develop a practical risk management tool in the form of a simulator for collaborative decision-making by the supply chain even before work starts on site. We have set ourselves a steep hill to climb, but we are confident we can achieve this objective with the help of our many industry partners.”
Research partners include Dr Nii Ankrah of Aston University, project clients, architects, engineers, and health and safety experts.
The University of Wolverhampton offers a number of construction courses including a Master's Degree in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution.
