Funding boost for nursing Apprenticeships

16/12/2020

The University of Wolverhampton is working with employers to offer funding for nursing Higher and Degree Apprenticeships to help boost recruitment and upskilling of keyworkers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Health Education England (HEE) has confirmed that it will make £7 million available for employers to support the Apprenticeship route into Registered Nursing with the possibility it may be extended over the next four years to support the government’s aim of recruiting 50,000 more nurses across the NHS.

The University is on the National Nursing & Midwifery Apprenticeship Framework for Health Education England to allow employers to access the funding incentives supporting Registered Nurse Degree Apprentices and other Nursing Apprenticeship programmes.

The funding is £8,300 per Apprentice per year for both new and existing Apprentices to support employers with expenses such as staffing costs while apprentices are undertaking education and training.

Jackie Mitchell, Head of Academic Development for Apprenticeships in the University’s Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing, said: “Nursing Associates and assistant practitioners can benefit from the funding that will allow them to train to become nurses through a shortened ‘top-up’ apprenticeship.

“The ‘Training Grant’ of £8,300 is payable to the employer of each Apprentice per year. This grant is available across all four fields of nursing practice (adult, child, mental health and learning disability) and available for new starts, and those already on programme going into years 2, 3 and 4 of the Apprenticeship.

“The University has just celebrated its first two cohorts of Nursing Associate Apprentices reaching their end point assessments. This additional funding will help employers to continue to upskill and further boost recruitment, offering vital support to the healthcare sector at a time when it’s needed the most.”
