Students score sports science bursaries

25/11/2019

Students are gaining valuable experience behind the scenes at the region’s football clubs as part of a sports science course at the University of Wolverhampton.

The MRes Sport and Exercise course supports students to develop as a researcher within their specialist area of sport.

This year five students have secured bursaries for their fees, including two students who are working with Wolves FC.

Raj Soni-Tricker has secured a Wolverhampton Wanderers FC sport science bursary, working within the Academy at Wolves.

He said: “I think this will help develop my applied research skills within football which I’m keen to incorporate into my work. I have been with Wolves for over a month now and it’s great experience. It’s very hands-on and I’m working with the players and staff there.”

Gavin Uppal has secured the Performance Analyst Bursary at Walsall FC. He said: “I am really excited to start the course. I want to develop the skills I have developed at undergraduate level and apply them in the elite performance field.”

Meanwhile Rebecca Lea has gained a role working as a Lab Assistant at the University. She said: “I’m excited by the new role – I’ve done a lot of lab work and this will give me more experience. My dream job would be to work as a physiologist in a cycling team.”

Dr Tina Smith, Senior Lecturer in Biomechanics and MRes Sport & Exercise course leader, said: “The bursaries are an excellent opportunity for our students to gain experience in professional sport and exercise environments. Having the work experience alongside their Master’s qualification allows the students to enter the job market well-prepared.”

The MRes Sport & Exercise course aims to develop students as a researcher and reflective, evidence-based practitioner within their specialist area of sport, exercise or coaching. There is an emphasis on student-led research and modules focused on the application of research within both laboratory and applied settings.
