Research to examine extent of student homelessness in the UK

The problem of homelessness among UK students will be examined in a new research project led by the University of Wolverhampton.

Academics believe problems could be 'hidden' for a number of reasons including students’ embarrassment or unwillingness to report homelessness, or the fact that students may be ‘sofa surfing’ with friends or even living in their vehicles.

Researchers from the University's Faculty of Social Sciences will be examining the issue of homelessness and rough sleeping in Higher Education.

Professor Kate Moss, Professor of Criminal Justice at the University, said: "This social phenomenon is a problem that few in the Higher Education sector or elsewhere are aware of due to the often hidden nature of homelessness amongst students.

"No UK research studies have investigated this problem and there is no formal definition of student homelessness."

Professor Moss will be working with Dr Kate Williams and Paramjit Singh at the University. The team will undertake a ground-breaking national study and aim to raise awareness about the problem and find solutions to alleviate student homelessness and rough sleeping.

They will be collecting data to discover the extent of student homelessness and the experiences of those affected by the issues. They will also be looking at what policies exist within Higher Education institutions to assist students when they experience home insecurity.

Any UK students wishing to take part in an online survey – which is completely anonymous – should go to

Funding for the project has been secured from the British Academy/Leverhulme. The only example definition of student homelessness is found in the US McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act 1987.
