University’s Formula 3 Race Team secures new engine sponsor

The University of Wolverhampton Racing Team (UWR) is gearing up to compete in this year’s MotorSport Vision Racing (MSVR) F3 Cup Championship with the support of new official engine sponsor Securi-flex Ltd.

Securi-flex Ltd is the UK leader in the importation and distribution of specialist cables to the Electrical and Security Wholesale markets. This is the first time that the West Sussex based firm has sponsored a racing team, offering to support the engineering students at the University’s Telford Innovation Campus which has recently benefited from an investment of £10 million in its engineering facilities.

Stuart Taylor, Managing Director at Securi-flex Ltd, said: “Having met the team of students at Autosport International recently, I was impressed by their dedication to the racing team, as well as their professionalism and knowledge. No other university team in the UK is competing at their level, and the pride they take in their work fits exactly with the ethos of Securi-flex.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work and passion to build Securi-flex into the company it is today, and I hope that by sponsoring the team we can inspire the next generation of engineers being taught at the University of Wolverhampton to manufacture their own success. It’s a privilege to be investing in grass-roots talent, and I look forward to seeing them win a race or two in the coming season.”

Securi-flex’s range of SFX cabling is at the forefront of the UK market, and has become one of the most trusted brands across a variety of industries, including security, TV & Satellite, Data, Telecommunications and Home Automation.

As exclusive engine sponsor for UWR, Securi-flex is covering the costs of the annual “refresh” of the UWR’s Mugen Honda engine. UWR is the only team to use this engine in the F3 Cup.

The partnership sees a synergy between Securi-flex’s broad range of products and the variety of engineering courses on offer at the University. Courses include manufacturing, aerospace, chemical, electrical and mechanical and students learn skills that can be put to use across the UWR’s portfolio of cars including the Dallara F308, two Morgan Plus Four Club Sports run in the AR Morgan Challenge, and the University’s annual entry in the Formula Student competition.

Dan Bird, Head Student Engineer on the F3 Cup Team, who is studying for a degree in Motorsport Engineering, said: "This is a chance like no other, and studying here has truly heightened my ambitions in life and has given me the confidence to succeed in my motorsport career. Thanks to sponsors like Securi-flex, our team is able to reach the goals we set and our drive to win has never been better.”

Head of the School of Engineering, Dr Syed Hasan, said: “At the School of Engineering, we’re committed to producing graduates that are ready to enter the workforce and begin making a difference from day one. The School of Engineering takes pride in delivering innovative vertical blended learning across all engineering programmes which prepares industry ready graduates. The skills that students are learning are vital for any workplace but working on the UWR team is also a good training ground for teaching soft skills like effective communication and team work.

“This year will be UWR’s fourth season in the MSVR F3 Cup, and each year a mixture of new and experienced students put their engineering knowledge to the test against professional teams from across the UK and Europe. They’ve been successful in previous seasons, placing second in 2016 and 2017, and third in 2018, but always contesting the championship into the final race of the year. With the help and support of Securi-flex, perhaps 2019 will be their year to take the chequered flag.”

Anyone interested in studying Engineering at the University should register for the next Open Day on Saturday 2nd February 2019.
