Uni scores a deal with Walsall FC

06/12/2019

The University of Wolverhampton has kicked off a new sponsorship deal with Walsall FC.

The University is a long term supporter of the Saddlers, and now sponsors the Academy team.

Sports students benefit from the partnership as they are able to work with players and coaching staff at the Club, as well as gaining expert insights through guest lectures.

The partnership also enables the football club to benefit from the University’s sports facilities at its Walsall Campus which have recently undergone an initial £1 million revamp.

This includes new hi-tech equipment such as cutting edge 3D motion capture technology, which was tested out by England Test cricket captain Joe Root during a recent visit to the University, and an environmental chamber to replicate nearly any climate on the planet.

The University’s branding also appears at the team’s Banks’s Stadium as sponsors of the away stand.

Dr Richard Medcalf, Director of the Institute of Human Sciences, said: “We are delighted to be expanding our partnership with Walsall FC to further develop our links with the Academy team. As the University of Opportunity, we ensure our students have access to the best experience possible, and this partnership enables them to work with professional footballers, hear from coaching staff and go behind the scenes at a football club to fully understand how teams operate. We wish the Saddlers all the best for the rest of the season.”

Stefan Gamble, Chief Executive Officer at Walsall FC, said: “We have enjoyed a long and successful partnership with the University of Wolverhampton for many years.  This now goes from strength to strength with the expansion of our relationship which is invaluable and mutually beneficial to both organisations.  The University play a vital role in the success of the Club’s Academy.”

The University is launching a new sports curriculum, which has been developed to focus on students’ future career aspirations and job prospects.
