Sports teams from the University of Wolverhampton will be taking to the pitch in rainbow coloured laces as part of a national awareness campaign.

Stonewall’s #RainbowLaces Day will take place on Wednesday, 28 November 2018 to encourage people to be active allies to LGBT people in sport.

The University will be encouraging sports clubs and teams, recreational sports participants, staff and community supporters to wear rainbow laces on Wednesday.

The University’s teams will be in action at the Walsall Campus and competing at other universities on Wednesday as part of British Universities and College Sports (BUCS) competitions.

James Dale, Sports Manager (General), said: “We’re really looking forward to getting involved in #RainbowLaces day this year. As a University, we aim to be an inclusive, welcoming environment to all and we want to show our support for LGBT people in sport.

“LGBT people are part of our club community, so this is a great opportunity to celebrate them, share their stories, and show our support.

“We’ll be giving out the laces at our Walsall Campus and if people don’t wear boots for their sport they can still get involved by tying them in their hair or attaching to their bag!”

This year’s Rainbow Laces campaign period runs from 17 November to 7 December 2018 and includes involvement from the Premier League, RFU, England Hockey, England Netball, and many other national governing bodies.

University staff, students and members of the community can get involved by using #RainbowLacesDay and #WYRLD2018 on social media on Wednesday, 28 November 2018.
