Research into the role of men in childcare


New research by University of Wolverhampton experts looking at the role of men in childcare settings is to be launched.

The study into the value of male practitioners within early years settings has been conducted with the London Early Years Foundation (LEFY).

Dr Helen Perkins and Tracey Edwards from the Childhood and Family Studies team at the University carried out the research which involved 11 nurseries, 44 children and 12 teacher researchers.

They have been invited to present the emerging findings at the LEYF annual Margaret Horn debate on Monday, 19 November 2018 at BBH Global in London.

Paul Ramchandani, LEGO® Professor of Play in Education at Cambridge University, will chair the debate, which is centred around gender equality in childcare.

Dr Perkins, Senior Lecturer in Childhood and Family Studies, said: “We have been working with the London Early Years Foundation to explore the value of male practitioners in early years settings.  The research is a follow up project from LEYF’s original report Men Working in Childcare.

“In partnership with the University of Wolverhampton, LEYF will be presenting new research from the child's perspective on what they understand about men in childcare, alongside the world premiere of the Men in Childcare film, The Tea Party.”

The London Early Years Foundation (LEYF) is a family of 39 community nurseries in London which follow a unique curriculum based on academic research, partnerships with international early years organisations and their own internal research.

The University of Wolverhampton is the only one in the country to offer a foundation degree following the innovative LEYF teaching methods.
