Expo has designs on building innovation

The University of Wolverhampton switched visitors on to the latest innovation in architecture at a recent Building Information Modelling (BIM) event.

The BIM in Wolves Expo event was held at the University’s City Campus by School of Architecture and Built Environment staff and focused on all aspect of BIM technology - an intelligent 3D model-based process that gives architecture, engineering and construction professionals the insight and tools to efficiently plan, design, construct and manage buildings and infrastructure.

The event was sponsored by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and Solas Ceramics and saw industry practitioners networking with students and staff from Architecture Degree courses across all levels.

Speakers included David Simpson from Associated Architects, Chris Johnston from Willmott Dixon, Lydia Moth from Architype 4 Pillars of BIM and Helen Farmer from ETC Design amongst others.

Olive White, Lecturer in Architecture at the University, said: “This inaugural event showcased some great examples of utilising a range of technology in the BIM process and, in particular, it was fascinating to see how BIM has been used by Associated Architects to design the new School of Architecture and Built Environment Campus at the Springfield Brewery site.”

Dr David Heesom, Reader in Building Information Modelling at the University, said “Architecture students have been involved in numerous Heritage BIM projects around the region including remodelling Queen Street in Wolverhampton, the reconstruction of historic buildings in Worcester in collaboration with Avoncroft Museum and 3D laser scanning at St James’ Priory ruins in Dudley.”

Anthony Woodsford, presenting at one of the sessions from Corstorphine + Wright Architects, said: “I always enjoy these types of events as I get to catch up with counterparts and specialists from other companies, plus it’s a chance to see what technologies they are utilising and if they find them successful.”

Anyone interested in studying Architecture related courses, or a postgraduate course in BIM, at the University should register for the next Open Day on Saturday 2nd February 2019.
