New University research centre to help transform communities

The University of Wolverhampton has officially launched a new research centre to tackle social welfare issues in the community.

The Institute for Community Research and Development (ICRD) includes a team of experts working on projects to transform lives and increase social mobility. Projects include work to tackle issues such as domestic violence, housing problems and rehabilitation.

A launch event was held on Wednesday, 23 May 2018 which included a speech from guest speaker Lynsey Hanley, an author and cultural commentator, and introduction from the University's Vice Chancellor Professor Geoff Layer.

Professor Laura Caulfield, founding chair of the Institute, spoke at the launch about the centre's future plans and research work.

She said: "ICRD undertakes pioneering community development studies to improve the lives of individuals in the region, and working with our partnership networks to champion for change.

"We are bringing together expertise from a number of key areas including education, health and social policy, to help improve communities within the region.

"The research and projects undertaken will influence policy and practice and create opportunities for positive change."

The launch took place at the University's Lord Swarj Building and guests included representatives from local councils and charities, as well as community workers and third sector organisations.
