Lecture to discuss innovative fighting on the Western Front

30/05/2018

The tactics and innovative fighting methods of the British Army on the Western Front will be discussed in a guest lecture at the University of Wolverhampton.

Dr Stuart Mitchell, from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, will visit the University on Wednesday, 13 June 2018.

The free talk is open to the public and is titled ‘Ascending the Learning Curve: The 32nd Division’s experience on the Western Front’.

It will take place in the Millennium City Building (room MC001) at the Wolverhampton City Campus from 5.30-7pm.

Professor of War Studies at the University, Gary Sheffield, said: “We are delighted to welcome Dr Stuart Mitchell to the University of Wolverhampton to present our latest lecture.

“In this talk Dr Stuart Mitchell will discuss how the British Expeditionary Force learned the tactical lessons of the First World War on the Western Front. He will explain how generals could stifle or promote learning and how the army's administration helped spread new ideas between different formations. Far from an organisation locked into a narrow set of ideas the British Army in France and Flanders will be shown to be a dynamic and innovative fighting force capable of adapting to one of the most challenging periods of military history.”

The talk is the 14th in the University of Wolverhampton and Western Front Association (WFA) First World War Centenary Lecture Series.

Generously supported by a grant from the WFA, the series is held at the University of Wolverhampton, is open to the public, and will run until the end of 2018.

Admission is free but people can register their details in advance with Dr Phylomena Badsey: p.badsey@wlv.ac.uk
