Festival urges the public to go potty about clay

19/03/2018

The University of Wolverhampton School of Art is taking part in a national celebration of clay as part of the UK-wide Get Creative Festival.

The Get Creative Festival is the UK's largest celebration of ‘have-a-go activity’ and runs from 17th until 25th March 2018.  The festival encourages people to try their hand at something new and creative - from pottery and printmaking to hand-bell ringing and quilting - at free workshops across the country.

The University’s Applied Arts (Ceramics and Glass) department is opening its doors to members of the public on Friday 23rd March 2018 as part of the festival’s Hey Clay! initiative, designed to give everyone the chance to unleash their inner potter.

Paul McAllister, Course Leader in Glass and Ceramics in the Wolverhampton School of Art, said:  “Pottery is one of the world’s most enduring and lasting traditions with the first use of functional pottery vessels for storing water and food thought to be around 9000 or 10,000 BC. Clay bricks were also made around the same time.

“The University of Wolverhampton has some of the best ceramics facilities in the UK and we are really pleased to be offering people the chance to get in touch with their inner potter by getting creative as part of this national festival."

Sessions will run at the Wolverhampton School of Art in the George Wallis Building, City Campus, Wolverhampton between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm and 2.00 pm and 5.00 pm.  This is a FREE event but booking is required by emailing P.Mcallister@wlv.ac.uk.
