Top marks for Early Childhood Studies course
The University of Wolverhampton is one of only three in the country to introduce a new level of recognition for students on its Early Childhood Studies course.
The Early Childhood Studies Graduate Practitioner Competencies aim to shape the identity of the early childhood workforce and strengthen the professional practice aspect of the degree.
The competencies have been developed by members of the national Early Childhood Studies Degree Network in conjunction with students and employers.
Currently there are different routes into the early childhood careers, with some programmes having an academic focus only, while others offer placement opportunities or are employment based.
Under the new system, an early career Early Childhood Graduate Practitioner at Wolverhamptonwill have met nine competencies through assessed placement tasks, observations of practice and academic assignments.
The competencies are:
- Advocating for young children’s rights and participation
- Promoting holistic child development
- Working directly with young children, families and colleagues to promote health, well-being, safety and nurturing care
- Observing, listening and planning for young children to support their well-being, early learning, progression and transitions
- Safeguarding and Child Protection
- Inclusive Practice
- Partnership with parents and caregivers
- Collaborating with others
- Ongoing professional development.
Dr Helen Perkins, Senior Lecturer Childhood & Family Studies, said: “The competences are far reaching and reflect the wider national and international early childhood sector.
“For students who want to work directly with children, having early childhood graduate practitioner competencies as part of the degree will enable them to stand out at interview.
“Their practice will be acknowledged and therefore it will be clear to employers or institutions offering postgraduate study that they not only have in-depth theoretical knowledge and understanding of how children grow, learn and develop, but that they are able to put it into practice as well.”
