Local arts festival packs a poetic punch

06/06/2018

For the fourth year running, the University of Wolverhampton is staging its seven week festival across Wolverhampton and Walsall in celebration of the arts.

Artsfest is a collaborative project led by the University’s Faculty of Arts including The Performance Hub, based in Walsall, and the Arena Theatre.  Students and staff have collaborated with local venues including the Mander Centre, Newhampton Arts Centre and the Light House Media Centre to stage events covering music, dance, theatre, literature, poetry, film, art and design.

Local poet by day and boxer by night, Matt ‘man’ Windle, Birmingham Poet Laureate, will be packing some poetic punch at the Mander Centre on 30th June.

“A healthy body leads to a healthy mind and nothing gets our creative juices flowing better than being active. Creative writing is for everyone. We do it every day through texts and social media so I'm hoping to erase some of the stigma that surrounds poetry and watch the participants have fun with words.”

A variety of events and workshops are on offer including an African folktales workshop, a Bowie Experience concert at the Grand Theatre, the University’s annual Degree Show celebrating student work, a Windrush exhibition at Wolverhampton Art Gallery and a screening of The Royal Ballet’s Swan Lake at the Light House Media Centre.

Dr John Pymm, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, said:  “As Artsfest enters its fourth year, we have joined with cultural venues throughout Wolverhampton and Walsall.  As well as celebrating the achievements of the Faculty of Arts students, we’ve invited an eclectic range of new artists from across the region and further afield, allowing them a chance to use Artsfest as a platform to enhance their careers.

“There’s something for every taste and age, and events to suit every budget – with many free activities on offer – as well as exclusive Artsfest discounts.”

Artsfest will run from Friday 8th June until Saturday 30th June 2018. Join the Artsfest conversation online by using #WLVArtsfest.  The City Launch Party takes place at The Mander Centre on Saturday 9th June between 12.00 midday and 4.00 pm.  There will be FREE performances, including Jai Jashn Dance (JJD), a non-profit community dance group as well as promenade performance, edible tattoos and glittery eyebrows.
