Is laughter really the best medicine?

22/06/2018

Leading international researchers, comedy practitioners and psychologists will consider whether laughter really is the best medicine at an event hosted by the University of Wolverhampton.

The 18th International Summer School and Symposium on Humour and Laughter will take place at the Telford Innovation Campus from 2-7 July 2018.

The course is aimed at people involved in researching humour from a psychological, artistic or scientific point of view.

It will introduce them to the kinds of approaches that are being used around the world to put humour to work and to deliver the benefits of humour and laughter.

The summer school is being organised by Dr Tracey Platt from the and Josiane Boutonnet from the Faculty of Arts. Delegates from the USA, Australia and Malta will be among those present and 12 experts will be on hand to teach on the course throughout the week.

Dr Platt said: “Interest in both research on humour and practical applications of humour has increased sharply in recent decades. Areas of academic research into humour include psychology, human machine interaction, as well as in the arts, and from a historical and cultural point of view.

“The Summer School aims to the meet the needs of new students and early career researchers who want a deeper understanding of humour and laughter in fields ranging from the psychological, to the computational and practical. It is also aimed at trained scholars in the sciences and humanities who are considering embarking on new investigations of humour or laughter related phenomena.”

The Symposium is a popular session within the week when the Summer School participants have the opportunity to present their own work, gaining experience and valuable feedback on their concepts and ideas.
