Sports teams at the University of Wolverhampton are celebrating a successful first half of the season.

Significant progress is being made on the sports fields and courts by the University’s men’s and women’s teams.

Deputy Director of the Institute of Sport Bess Evans says: “We are making significant progress on the sports fields. So far this is our best ever BUCS season, with a number of teams already vying for promotion although we are only half way through the season. This is a great tribute to the hard work and dedication of the WLV Sport team, our first-class coaches, and to our long-term Focus Sport Plan.

“In the BUCS League competitions, Women’s Football and Men’s Futsal are top of Division 2, with Men’s Basketball top of Division 3. Men’s Football is top of Division 4 and Men’s Rugby has already won the Division 5 League, securing promotion to Division 4.

“In the BUCS Conference Cup competitions, four teams are through to the quarter-finals: Women’s Football, Men’s Futsal, Men’s Basketball and Women’s Volleyball. It’s likely three or four teams will get through to the semi-finals, possibly even the finals. Netball and Men’s Rugby are in the Conference Plate quarter-finals.

“Three of our student-athlete judo scholars are celebrating after scooping three gold medals. Jemima Yeats-Brown, Eric Ham and Kelly Petersen-Pollard all won their weight categories at the British Senior Judo Championships recently.

“We are also expecting further successes in the Individual BUCS competitions in February, where our judo players will go again. This year, we have hopes, too, in Boxing especially as we are hosting the football-teamBUCS Boxing Championships at Walsall Campus on the 1-3 February 2019 for the first time.

“I would like to pay a special tribute to our team of head coaches, who have transformed so many of our teams, and athletes. As the results show, they are inspirational mentors to our student athletes.  At the same time, they have between them recruited 23 student-athletes sports scholars for this season alone.”
