Sweet success for University

15/05/2017

University of Wolverhampton staff enjoyed the sweet taste of success after achieving silver awards in a national cake competition.

Mark Reeves-Williams, Store Manager in Starbucks, and Kate Jones, Sous Chef at the City Campus, took part in the TUCO (The University Caterers Organisation) Skills Competition held at the University of Warwick.

Mark and Kate both achieved silver awards in the cupcake and tray bake sectors of the competition. It was the first time the University had entered the national contest.

Mark's creative cupcakes were chocolate and beetroot, Turkish delight and citrus green tea, while Kate’s tasty treats were an American dream, Easter extravaganza and Fairtrade bar.

Amanda Shipley, Catering & Retail Operations Manager, said: “This is a fantastic achievement as it is the first time we have participated in the TUCO competitions, which receive participants from across all in-house catered universities in the country.

“We’re incredibly proud of our new catering facilities at our City Campus, and are delighted that our talented staff members and their tasty treats have been recognised too.”

A total of 150 experts from the higher education sector took part to showcase their knowledge and creativity.

The Salon Culinaire was one of six categories at the TUCO competitions, which also included bar skills, barista skills, campus speed cook, chef’s challenge and cook and serve.

The University Caterers Organisation (TUCO) is the leading membership organisation for in-house caterers operating in the higher and further education sectors.

Now in its 24th year, TUCO created its annual competitions as a platform for sharing industry knowledge.
