Graduate has designs on range of modesty fashion clothing

A University of Wolverhampton graduate has found a fitting career in fashion design by launching a range of modesty sportswear and clothing which has been picked up by international retailer, House of Fraser.

Jessica Robinson, 26, from Birmingham, studied for a degree in Creative and Professional Writing and Media and Communication Studies in the Faculty of Arts.  She graduated in 2011 and after working in sales for a while, she decided to start her own business – Shorso - and now designs and sells a range of modesty fashion clothing.

She said: “I remembered a time at school when Muslim girls wanted to take part in swimming lessons but didn’t feel comfortable wearing swimsuits because they were too revealing and they would wear leggings and t-shirts with the swimsuit, even though the clothing wasn’t suitable for swimming. I designed a body suit suitable for swimming and my business grew from there.

“Whilst I didn’t study for a qualification in fashion design, I gained a lot of confidence whilst at University, both from the lectures, either engaging in group work or speaking in front of people, and the experience of living in halls. It prepares you for the outside world and ensures that you have all the skills necessary to find a job. I now manage all aspects of my business from sales through to marketing and customer service.”

Jessica launched her range online with House of Fraser in 2015 and also supplies various schools and uniform shops in the UK. Her swimwear range, which includes sports headwear and hijabs, has also been featured on the popular ITV show this morning.
