Dedicated students celebrated

02/05/2017

Dedicated students who volunteer in the community and have completed successful work placements have been recognised by the University of Wolverhampton.

The annual Employment and Volunteering Awards recognise University students whose achievements go beyond their academic studies.

The awards celebrate students and graduates who make a valuable contribution to society and businesses by undertaking a range of extra-curricular activities, including part-time jobs, volunteering, work experience opportunities, placements and internships.‌

The award winners on Friday, 28 April 2017 included Sasha Wood, who was named Student Employee of the Year. Sasha’s design ideas were used as the basis of the Students’ Union new brand, and the SU website was redesigned to fit in with the style she produced.

Rebecca Baker won Volunteer of the Year for her work at Acorn Children’s Hospice. She was nominated for making “a positive impact on numerous children and young people who use Acorns Children’s Hospice” and for being “fundamental in raising both necessary funds and awareness”.

Other award winners included:

  • Enterprise Action Business of the Year: Susan Brisco
  • Student Placement Award: Mintautas Pabrinkis
  • Graduate Intern Award: Dipisha Patel
  • Graduate Placement Award: Juhina Khanom
  • Volunteer Mentor of the Year: Annika Nisbett

Students who had undertaken either work placements or studies abroad were also recognised.

Dean of Students Jon Elsmore said: “The Employment and Volunteering Awards are a really positive event celebrating the achievements of our students and graduates outside their academic work. By volunteering and undertaking placements, our students are gaining valuable work experience and social skills to add to their CVs and make them stand out from the crowd, as well as giving back to the local community.

“In the last year, our students have registered 74,819 hours of volunteer work which has a monetary value of £970,954, which is a fantastic achievement. We would like to congratulate and thank all the winners and nominees.”
