Schools to face legal battle

21/03/2017

Six schools will take to the stand to argue a moot problem at a University of Wolverhampton law competition.

The University’s mock courtroom will host the regional schools mooting competition on Wednesday, 29 March 2017.

Pupils from six local schools – SWB Bilston Academy, Highfields School in Wolverhampton, Solihull Sixth Form College, Halesowen College, Windsor High School and Sixth Form in Halesowen, and Holyhead School, Birmingham – will take part in the event.

Hosted by the University of Wolverhampton Law School, the moot will simulate a court hearing and participants will analyse a legal problem, research the relevant law, prepare written submissions and present an argument.

There will be four judges to assess how well the students have presented their case, and High Sheriff of the West Midlands, Dr Keith Bradshaw DL, will be on hand to make the presentation to the winners.

Head of the University of Wolverhampton Law School, Sukhninder Panesar, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the regional schools competition allowing 6th form students to experience presenting legal arguments in a mock court room. The first round of the competition saw some excellent arguments and presentations from the pupils. It is great that the Law School and the regional schools are working together to enrich the pupils experience in the study of law.”

In a moot, two pairs of students argue a fictitious legal case in front of a judge. To win, they do not necessarily have to win the legal case, but must make the best presentation of their legal arguments.
