Paralympian inspires future sports leaders

Paralympian gold medallist Danielle Brown inspired female school pupils to be leaders in sport during a special event at the University of Wolverhampton.

Female pupils were invited to take part in the second This Girl Will event at the Walsall Campus.

Around 110 pupils attended the all-day female only event, which aimed to inspire pupils to play, lead and study sport.

The event began with an inspirational address by Danielle Brown MBE, Double Paralympic and three times World Gold Medal winner.

Danielle, a University of Wolverhampton honorary fellow, won gold in two consecutive Paralympic Games and three World Championships. In 2010 she made history by becoming the first disabled athlete to represent England in an able-bodied discipline, and won a gold medal in the team event.

Dr Chris Sellars, Deputy Director of the Institute of Sport, said: “This is the second time we have hosted a This Girl Will event for local pupils, and we were delighted to welcome inspirational speaker Danielle Brown MBE to share her experiences.

“Inspired by the This Girl Can campaign and International Women’s Day, the day featured motivational sport stories from some of our international sport scholars, female sport professionals and guest speakers.

“We also included a session designed to help girls create an action plan for their careers and finished the event with a celebration of the girls' activities from throughout the day.”

The schools that attended the event were: Heath Park Academy, Health Futures UTC, Ormiston Shelfield, ACE Academy, Bartley Green School, Willenhall EAct Academy, Smestow School and City College Coventry.
