New international development degree launched

The first degree in the UK to combine business management and international development has been launched by the University of Wolverhampton.

The new MBA (International Development) is aimed at professionals and students working, or aspiring to work in, developing and emerging economies.

The course is aimed at business people and managers from any sector who want to understand international development, and also for people working in international development who want to progress their business management.

Starting in September 2017, the course is a joint initiative between the Centre for International Development and Training (CIDT) and the University of Wolverhampton Business School.

Rachel Roland, Course Leader and Deputy Head of CIDT, said: “This course will ensure that students develop cutting edge business and management skills, as well as gain a crucial understanding of the dynamic and complex landscape within which both global business and international development assistance operate.

“This degree is the first of its kind in the UK and will engage students with topical issues in the landscape of international development and equip them with key skills to design and manage successful projects, development organisations and businesses within a developing country context.”

Through the use of real-life case studies and role play and interaction with visiting speakers, the course assesses various aspects of the business environment and offers students opportunities to further understand the global and local consequences of business behaviours and the way international development is carried out.

Successful completion of the MBA (International Development) will enhance career prospects in a number of roles such as:

  • international development project or programme management
  • staff or boards of directors in the international private sector or trusts/charities
  • fundraising manager
  • grant manager
  • management consultant
  • corporate social responsibility manager
  • researcher in international development and the development of the private sector.

The course features bespoke modules in sustainable development in practice and project/programme management for international development. Four modules in strategic management, marketing management, managing financial performance and leadership and human resource practice in organisations, plus a research project, complete the course.
