University celebrates LGBT History Month

26/01/2017

The University of Wolverhampton will be hosting a series of high profile events to celebrate LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) History Month in February 2017.

Peter Tatchell, a human rights campaigner best known for his work with LGBT social movements will introduce a screening of Call Me KuChu, a film set in Uganda where openly gay man, David Kato and his fellow activists work to defeat new legislation in their country that would make homosexuality punishable by death.

The talk and screening will be at the Arena Theatre in Wolverhampton on Thursday, 2 February 2017 from 5.30pm.

School of Performing Arts drama students from the University’s Walsall Campus will be appearing in an award-winning play, The Pride, which was written by British writer Alexi Kaye Campbell. (pictured)  The story focuses on the ‘then and now’ in two eras through the eyes of two sets of characters, exploring society’s attitudes towards gays and lesbians.  This event on Wednesday, 8 February at 5pm will be followed by a question and answer session with the writer.

Will Cooling, Equality & Diversity Manager at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “The University works hard to enhance the experience of BME, LGBT and Disabled staff and students. We wanted to mark this special month with a series of events which will highlight some of the issues faced by the LGBT community as well as celebrating its achievements.

“Our aim is to bring staff, students, the local community and LGBT groups together to discuss, debate and really celebrate our diverse communities in the Black Country. We will also be offering local schools and colleges an LGBT citizen workshop to ensure that the messages are cascaded across different generations.”

All events will be taking place in the Arena Theatre.  Staff, students and the local community are all invited to attend.  Tickets can be reserved through the website.  For more details email: arena@wlv.ac.uk or call the box office on 01902 321321.
