Race team geared up for motorsport engineering show

06/01/2017

The University of Wolverhampton Race Team (UWR) is gearing up for the new race season – and it’s hoping to drive up interest in its range of engineering courses at Europe’s largest Motorsport show.

The team of engineering students, alongside staff, will be manning the largest educational stand at the Autosport International Show being held at the National Exhibition Centre on Thursday 12th January until Sunday 15th January 2017.

Featuring the latest innovation in motorsport, automotive and performance engineering technology, alongside cars and exhibitors from every level of motor racing, the show provides a platform for members of the industry to meet, network and do business as well as enthusiasts to see the fastest cars, biggest stars and live action.

The student-run professional Motorsport team will be displaying their Formula Renault car, built and raced by students, alongside the Formula Student car, which is fully designed and built by the students, the Morgan Motor Company Plus 4 Baby Doll and a full motion race track experience simulator.

The team has now competed in a series of professional championships including the 2015 Monoposto 2000 Championship, 2016 AR Morgan Challenge and were the only university to take part in the 2016 F3 Cup where the team took home 4 wins, 8 podiums and finished second overall.

Professor Ian Oakes, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Wolverhampton, said:  “UWR was created to give students real, hands-on industry experience and we’re delighted that 100% of students who have worked on the team are now employed in the engineering industry at companies such as Rolls Royce, Aston Martin and Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One.

“We’re really excited to have a presence at this premier pre-season motorsport event which brings together the world of motorsport before the race season starts. There will be information on the range of courses available at our Telford Innovation Campus – including Aerospace, Automotive, Chemical, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunications, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Motorsport Engineering.”

The University has invested £12 million in transforming the engineering facilities at Telford, including creating new workshops with two car bays, benches and professional tools to support the students’ work on its Formula Renault racing car. Visitors to the show can find the UWR Engineering team on Stand 7120.  The team will be giving a talk about the advancements in engineering on the ‘Tech Talks’ stand at 3.00 pm on Saturday 14th January 2017.
