Community student art exhibition focuses on empty spaces

04/01/2017

University of Wolverhampton students have developed an art exhibition exploring Wolverhampton’s empty spaces.

30 second year Fine Art degree students from the Wolverhampton School of Art have been working externally for their module ‘art in the community’ which has allowed them to engage and create in new locations outside of the classroom.

The students focused on the Westside of Wolverhampton to consider the impact of the regeneration plans on the community.  The exhibition – Desolate – will be taking place at the Asylum Art Gallery on Friday 6th January 2017 between 6.00 pm and 9.00 pm.  Admission is free and refreshments will be available.

Hannah Mary, Head of Events and Communications at Mental Spaces and Asylum Art Gallery, said:  “This really is an exhibition worth seeing.  The students have created an eye-opening reminder of the bleak emptiness lying within our presence.

“The work focuses on some rather dismal themes and will offer an interesting, although slightly uncomfortable, understanding of the artists’ reaction to local places in Wolverhampton.”

A variety of diverse work will be exhibited, from painting, print, photography, sculpture and mixed media.  Artists will be available on the night to talk about their ideas.
