Degree Apprentices build links in London

03/08/2017

The University of Wolverhampton launched its new Chartered Surveyor Built Environment Degree Apprenticeship course at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) headquarters in London recently.

More than 20 employers, including Interclass, Shaylor Construction, Rider Levett Bucknall and Turner Townsend, joined new Degree Apprentices and staff from the University of Wolverhampton on a behind-the-scenes tour at the premises in Parliament Square, London.

The new cohort of students, ranging from school-leavers through to mature learners, were shown around the historic building including the President’s Hall, the roof-terrace overlooking the House of Commons and the library and learning centre, getting the opportunity to meet key personnel from RICS.

Paul Hampton, Head of Built Environment at the University of Wolverhampton, said:  “This exclusive tour of the RICS headquarters in London gave employers and visitors an overview of this prestigious global organisation, helping them to understand the global significance of becoming a Chartered surveyor and how membership of the RICS provides a global acknowledgement of achievement. In particular apprentices will register and attend assessment of professional competence (APC) clinics whilst undertaking their degree course.

“The new Degree Apprenticeship pathways at the University are available for all Built Environment disciplines including Building Surveying, Quantity Surveying, Project Management and Property and Real Estate Management.  We’re delighted that so many employers are embracing the programme and committing to upskilling their workforce.”

Peter Hood, Construction Director at Interclass said: "We are strong advocates for Apprenticeships and the opportunity for one of our intake, Laura Smith, who has shown great enthusiasm for the industry, to progress onto the Degree course was an obvious next step. Today's trip to RICS will, I am sure, be a further inspiration on her career journey.”

Laura Smith, Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at Interclass, said: "Interclass has shown a fantastic support system for myself and other Apprentices.  I’m honoured to be given such an amazing opportunity to progress within the Industry and take on further study at the University of Wolverhampton.”

Over 20 students are joining the University in September 2017 on a five year Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship programme – studying for a traditional degree and undertaking an APC professional interview at the end of their studies.
