The Black Country's traditional manufacturing sector is performing strongly and continues to be a real strength of the region. To maintain this momentum and keep ahead of international competition the sector must continue to innovate and integrate with other sectors within the supply chain such as construction, logistics, environmental technologies and business services all of which, when combined , build an exciting future for the region.

Skills are a critical component in driving the economic growth and to reach its ambitious potential the region requires a workforce that has the skills to deliver growth now and to be able to fill the jobs of the future.

The introduction of the apprenticeship levy presents a real opportunity for forward-looking SMEs to forge ahead and upskill their workforce. The changes can also help the Black Country as a region achieve its strategic aims of apprenticeship growth.

• the Black Country's role within the Midlands Engine and on the international stage
