Degree students scout out live creative design project

11/04/2017

A University of Wolverhampton student created a winning design for a feature in a national magazine recently – scouting out the competition for future careers in the design industry.

Graphics and Visual Communication final year degree students took part in a live project with Immediate Media Co and The Scout Association’s magazine – a quarterly membership magazine which is distributed to The Scout Association’s 110,000 adult volunteers.

The students were tasked with working on an editorial design brief to create a new approach for a feature section called ‘In My Experience’.

Marc Austin, Course Leader in Graphic Design in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Wolverhampton, said: "Working with Immediate Media Co and The Scout Association’s magazine has provided the opportunity for our students to engage with a live, editorial design brief with possibilities to interpret the copy and critically generate creative type and image compositions.

“Coupled with the experience of resolving a ‘real-world’ design problem, the prize of seeing their work published has generated a buzz in our design studios. We are immensely proud of the work that our students produced in response to this project – they have engaged professionally with the realities of designing to tight publishing deadlines, and impressed the clients with their creativity.

“This was a great opportunity for students and emphasises the external focus of the Graphic Design course as well as the enthusiasm and employability of our students."

Kevin Yeates, Head of Creative at The Scout Association, said: “We called upon the design skills of the students from the Wolverhampton School of Art to create a new ‘In My Experience’ feature.  The students competed to have their work featured in the magazine and we were really impressed with the quality of the design work.

“The winning design was chosen by the young person who was the subject of the feature. Student, Najah, said that Paula’s design best represented her experience in the Scouts.”

Paula Wesolowska, 22 from Wolverhampton, whose winning design featured in the magazine, said: “I really enjoyed doing the live brief and I am very glad that my work fitted well with the young person’s scouting experience. I would like to thank everyone involved for the opportunity. The focus on building real life, industry skills on the course has really helped me consider the kind of career path I’d like to take and is equipping me with the right kind of work experience I will need to find a job.”
