University’s first female President hosts global conference in Qatar

The University of Wolverhampton’s first female President recently hosted the inaugural Quantity Surveyors International (QSI) Conference in Qatar.
The event, which took place in Doha, was attended by almost 100 international delegates and was the first QSi conference to be held outside of the UK.
QSI is an international group representing quantity surveyors and specialising in the financial aspects of construction and engineering. The non-profit organisation has developed into an international establishment with members spanning the globe.
Glynis Hampton, a lecturer in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Wolverhampton, is the first ever female President of QSI and the first academic to take up the position.
Hosting the conference, she said: “I was delighted to host our global conference in Qatar and proud to fly the Black-country flag in the Middle East.
“The conference focused on how industry and commerce can collaboratively promote best practice across the Quantity Surveying profession and how the academic world can work with employees to develop industry relevant curriculum.”
Professor Geoff Layer, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We are proud to be able to collaborate with partners such as British College of Applied Studies (BCAS) and QSi – especially on such an important, international stage.
“QSI is strategically placed to meet regional, national and international challenges for growth, and we all collectively play a role to ensure it is recognised as part of the solution. We are now actively looking at ways in which we can further strengthen our ties and this first international conference provides an ideal platform for the partnership to engage with a worldwide audience.”
The main purpose of the conference was to promote the Quantity Surveying profession and demonstrate how QSi supports quantity surveyors at all levels. The long term aim is to develop lifelong learning through continuous professional development on an international basis.
The University of Wolverhampton was a key sponsor of the event along with BCAS. Keynote speakers including Keith Blizzard, Mark Entwistle and Richard Hyde, explored the theme of how contract disputes can be avoided and contract matters can be resolved under FIDIC contracts.
Mr Rahuman, Chairman and Director of BCAS, said: “When originally asked to sponsor this event, I didn’t fully appreciate the valuable contribution QSi makes to its members and its significance to our organisation.
“Having participated in the event, I now appreciate the importance of QSi to the quantity surveying profession and its relevance to ourselves as an educational establishment. Working with our colleagues at the University of Wolverhampton, BCAS will continue to support QSi to develop its activities in the region and across the world.”
World board representatives, including the Qatar board hosts, were delighted with the positive feedback received from delegates attending the conference.
