Sports student scores a winning work placement with super league club

A University of Wolverhampton sports student has scored a winning internship with Indian Super League football club, Delhi Dynamos.
Tom Nicholls, 25 and from Sedgley in Dudley, has been appointed as the team’s Performance Analyst Intern for their pre-season tour of the UK and Sweden as well as the rest of their India football season until December.
Tom is studying for a Masters degree in Sports & Exercise (MRes). As a Performance Analyst intern he will provide support, under supervision, to the Delhi Dynamos coaching staff in filming, coding and editing match & training footage and the collation of statistical data of the Delhi Dynamos players and their opponents.
The Delhi Dynamos team is currently training at the University of Wolverhampton’s Institute of Sport at its Walsall Campus in preparation for a friendly match against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday 3rd September.
The University has been instrumental in delivering West Bromwich Albion Foundation’s Pass it Forward project. The enterprise partnership, which is co-funded by the University, was set up to provide school based football coaching for around 35,000 children between the ages of 5 and 14.
Dr Chris Sellars, Deputy Director of the Institute of Sport at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting training for the Delhi Dynamos team at our Walsall Campus but even more thrilled that Tom has managed to secure some vital work experience with one of the most popular clubs in the Super League, equipping him with skills which will prepare him for a future career in the industry. We are hoping for further student opportunities going forward.”
Tom said: “I am very much looking forward to working with the Club and learning from the vastly experienced coaching and technical staff. This is a great opportunity to develop my career in performance analysis, and this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Institute of Sport at the University of Wolverhampton."
Following on from the success of sports students travelling to India to provide coaching for young people earlier this year, 6 Sports Coaching Practice Degree students are preparing to travel to India in September - 4 going to Jaipur as part of the school programme and 2 to Delhi to continue the work of the successful Pass it Forward project.
