Former art student opens ceramic showroom


A University of Wolverhampton School of Art graduate and artist who creates tattoo inspired items will open her first workshop and showroom on Saturday 3rd September in Queen Street, Wellington.

Charlotte Clark started her business six years ago and sells her up-cycled ceramics at Alternative and Burlesque Fairs and also stocks them in high quality gift shops in the Midlands. Her work is described as quirky, macabre and curious with ranges including anatomical animals, wedding gift sets featuring skulls, personalised cat mugs and skeleton hand tea sets.

Social Media has played a big part in Charlotte’s success, with over 14,000 followers on Facebook and Instagram her products are often sold as soon as photographs are uploaded and she now has followers and customers all over the world.

Speaking ahead of the opening Charlotte Clark said: “I’m really excited to be able to have the space to design, produce and display my products all in one place. Wellington’s central location and the range of facilities attracted me to the area and I’m looking forward to getting involved in the local business and creative community.”

After graduating from the University of Wolverhampton with a degree in Glass Art Charlotte went on to set up one of the first pop up galleries in the UK. Located in Wolverhampton City Centre, Charlotte won an award for her Pretty Vacant venture while she was still a student.

Three years ago Charlotte was employed to set up and manage the Shop in the Square pop up shop for Black Country artists as part of Wolverhampton’s Portas Pilot project. The shop is still thriving and provides an outlet for nearly thirty designer makers to trial and sell their handmade products in a supportive environment.

Unique items are created from bone china items including mugs, animals, plates and lamp bases which are sourced from many different places. Next Charlotte designs the artwork digitally to make the transfer which is then printed using a decal printer. The transfer is then carefully applied by hand and fired in the kiln to melt the surface glaze.

Future plans include increasing the capacity by purchasing another kiln and employing part time staff to help with the packing and postage.

‌‌Students at the University of Wolverhampton are among the most employable in the UK after a new report revealed more than ever are going into jobs or further study.

Overall, 96 per cent of students who graduated from the University of Wolverhampton in 2015 were in work or further study six months after they had left – positioning the University as second in the UK*, outperforming the UK average for all universities and a record high for the University.
