Leading historian to present guest lecture

A leading historian is to present a guest lecture at the University of Wolverhampton focused on the power struggles in Europe in the run-up to the First World War.

Sir Richard Evans is a revered scholar and is best known for his research on the history of Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly the Third Reich. 

The President of Wolfson College Cambridge and Provost of Gresham College will present a guest lecture at the University on Tuesday, 15 November 2016.

The lecture will draw on Sir Richard Evans’ new book, The Pursuit of Power: Europe 1814-1914, which focuses on the revolutions, empire-building and wars that marked the 19^th century.

The event will start with refreshments at 5pm, with the lecture from 6pm in room MH002 in the Mary Seacole Building at City Campus Molineux. There will also be a book signing by the author.

Chair in Security Studies, Professor George Kassimeris, said: “Sir Richard Evans is one of the most brilliant scholars of his generation, so it is an honour to be welcoming him to the University for this guest lecture.

“The Pursuit of Power draws on a lifetime of thinking about 19^th century Europe to create a rich and entertaining exploration of a continent undergoing drastic transformation. The lecture is set to consider the revolutions, empire-building and wars that marked the 19^th century, during which huge cities sprang up, new European countries were created and where, for the first time, humans could communicate almost instantly over thousands of miles.”

Sir Richard J. Evans is President of Wolfson College, Cambridge and Provost of Gresham College. Until 2014 he was the Regius Professor of History at Cambridge University.

His previous books include In Defence of History, Telling Lies about Hitler, The Coming of the Third Reich, The Third Reich in Power and The Third Reich at War. He was knighted in 2012.

He has also appeared on a number of TV documentaries related to Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich.
