University picks up Business of the Year title at local awards ceremony

The University of Wolverhampton was hailed as ‘truly outstanding’ when staff picked up the Express & Star Business of the Year title at this year’s high-profile awards ceremony.

The University was short-listed for two categories, Business of the Year and Best Use of Technology.

With an annual turnover of more than £250 million, 2,500 staff and almost 20,000 UK students, the University makes a substantial impact on the economy and performance of the local and surrounding areas.

Professor Geoff Layer, Vice-Chancellor at the University, said:  “This fantastic award is recognition for the amazing achievements of our students, the remarkable hard work of our staff and the ambitious vision of our governors.

“Last year we announced our biggest ever investment programme, Our Vision, Your Opportunity, committing to generating £250 million of investment in five years to improve the student experience and boost the local economy.

“Our focus over the coming years will be on students and skills and it’s our ambition to build on the improvements that are being made to ensure that we continue to have an influential presence in the region for years to come."

Stewart Towe, Chairman of the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership, said:  “The University’s £250 million investment plan is a vote of confidence in the Black Country’s economic future.  The Black Country LEP looks forward to working in partnership with the university to maximise the growth potential of this investment.”

The University was recognised for its innovative partnerships and its work to improve education and opportunity for communities across the West Midlands.  Statistics show that 95% of the University’s class of 2014 are employed or are in further study, higher than the national average and an increase on previous years.
