University short-listed for Guardian university entrepreneurship award
A partnership initiative led by the University of Wolverhampton has been shortlisted for its commitment to driving forward entrepreneurship in this year’s Guardian University Awards.
The University’s SPEED PLUS initiative, which is a European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) collaboration between five universities, has been nominated in the category of ‘Entrepreneurship’ for developing, encouraging and enabling enterprise activity for students, staff and graduates.
As well as offering a six month intensive support package which includes a weekend business development residential and workshops covering subjects such as tax advice through to networking, one-to-one meetings are offered with consultants and beneficiaries have the opportunity to apply for additional funding through the project.
Geoff Layer, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been short-listed for this year’s prestigious Guardian University Awards - especially in the category of entrepreneurship. It is encouraging to be recognised for the support we offer our students both while they are studying with us and after they graduate.
“Our aim is to provide opportunities for our students that will change their lives, nurture their interests and help them to realise their ambitions. The SPEED PLUS team has made a valuable contribution to the growth of the local economy through encouraging people to develop their ideas and guiding them through the process of setting up their own businesses.”
Philip Law, Project Manager for SPEED Plus at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “Through the SPEED Plus initiative, Enterprise staff based at the University of Wolverhampton Science Park offer a wide range of consultancy services and development advice, help and support for current students, graduates, alumni and staff to start up and run their own business.
“The project has already locally supported the creation of 240 businesses, with 136 of those having already exceeded the crucial 12 month trading point.”
Winners will be announced at the Guardian University Awards ceremony on 16th March 2016 in London.
