29/06/2016

A Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) scheme at the University of Wolverhampton is being praised for its tremendous success with both students and staff.

The GTA Scheme, which was officially launched in 2014, was inspired by Vice Chancellor Professor Geoff Layer and was created with the aim of supporting the University’s strategy of being the ‘University of Opportunity’.

With the main focus being on giving learners the opportunity of gaining employment experience in an academic support role.

It also includes a professional development programme leading to the award of a PGCE (M) in Post Compulsory Education.

Cohort 1, the first chapter in the programme, is due to finish in August 2016, with Cohort 2 also currently underway.

Among those who joined Cohort 1 were English graduate Kauser Husain and Sports Graduate Kerys Harrop.

Kauser said: “One of the things I have enjoyed the most about the job is the variety of activities that I have been able to get involved with such as outreach activities and organising events.

“During my time as a GTA I have learnt a lot about myself and my identity as a teacher; I am passionate about the student experience and this job role has given me first-hand experience of working closely with students to ensure that they feel valued and confident in their studies.”

‌Kerys said: “The GTA scheme at the University of Wolverhampton has opened my eyes to a new career that I might not have considered previously.

“I think it is a fantastic opportunity for anybody that wants to get into teaching at FE or HE level.”
