School pupils get taste of university life at summer school
Almost 100 Year 10 pupils from schools across Staffordshire, Shropshire, Telford and the West Midlands visited the University of Wolverhampton recently to get a taste of university life.
Run in partnership with Keele University through the HEFCE funded initiative Explore University, the Residential Summer School was held over three days and two nights at the Telford Innovation Campus with a range of fun and interactive activities on offer including team building and confidence boosting exercises as well as taster sessions for Performing Arts, Psychology, Animation, Nursing and Science.
Ian Hart, Head of Access and Outreach at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “Our Summer School is a fun and interactive three day event designed to give pupils more understanding of what life is like at university as well as giving them a gentle introduction into the kinds of subjects they might be able to study.
“Research has shown that attending a Summer School can help young people to become more motivated and confident about their learning and they are more likely to apply to go to university having benefited from experiencing first-hand what university life is like.”
Catherine Wilks, Summer School Co-ordinator, said: “Year 10 is an important year for pupils as they are well on the way to sitting their GCSE exams and are beginning to think about their future pathways.
“The Summer School is a great way to raise the aspirations of young people to consider university as an option for their future by getting an in-depth experience of what university is like, giving the pupils a great insight into studying for degree level qualifications, as well as spending time with current university students, finding out more about their experiences of university.”
Schools that participated in the event were Abraham Darby Academy, Madeley Academy, Holy Trinity Academy, Telford Park School, Telford Priory School and Thomas Telford School in Telford, Blessed William Howard Catholic College and Sir Graham Balfour in Stafford, Chase Terrace Technology College in Burntwood, Health Futures University Technical College in West Bromwich, North East Wolverhampton Academy and South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy and Wednesfield High School, Sundorne Sports College in Shrewsbury and Walsall Virtual School.
