Celebration of University sporting achievements

University of Wolverhampton student sporting teams and players were celebrated at an annual end of year awards.

The University’s Institute of Sport Sports Awards 2016 was held at Molineux’s WV One venue.

The annual awards mark the achievements of the University’s sporting body and those teams and individuals that compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS).

Hosted by Wolverhampton cycling legend Hugh Porter MBE, it also featured an inspirational talk from Paralympic archery gold medallist Danielle Brown MBE.

Winners from the night included the Women’s Football Team, who won the BUCS Midlands 2A League title and Conference Cup Final, Seb Green who took gold at the British Judo Championships and Jack Hodgson who will be representing Team GB in the Paralympics in Rio.

Team of the Year: Women’s Football

Captain of the Year: Ashley Davies, Men’s Hockey

Coach of the Year: Zsuzsa Galloway, Volleyball

Sportsman of the Year: Seb Green, University of Wolverhampton Judo Club

Sportswoman of the Year: Emily Gordon, Swimming

Social Sports Activator of the Year: Ben Rabaiotti

Outstanding Achievement Award:  Jack Hodgson, Judo

Football Sports Team

Bess Evans, Deputy Director for the University’s Institute of Sport, said: “We have had some great performances this year with four teams winning their leagues. We entered 24 teams in all competitions across a range of sports so to come away with five trophies is a great achievement.

"The more we can improve performance and rankings the more it’ll boost the reputation of the University for sport and attract more elite athletes to study with us.

“Everyone at the University is really proud of the performances our teams and individuals have put in this year.”
