University sponsors Stafford Shakespeare festival

The University of Wolverhampton is one of the main sponsors at the Stafford Festival Shakespeare – currently taking place at Stafford Castle until Saturday 9th July 2016.

Established in 1991, Stafford Festival Shakespeare has fast become one of Europe’s largest open air Shakespeare productions and this year the Bard’s famous tragedy, Othello, is being performed against the striking background of Stafford Castle, in a purpose-built auditorium under the stars.

Produced by Stafford Gatehouse Theatre, for Stafford Borough Council, which lies in the heart of Stafford Town Centre – the event is a centrepiece of the borough’s popular family orientated Stafford Festival with theatre productions performed annually against the dramatic backdrop of Stafford Castle.  It’s regarded as one of the top three Open Air Shakespeare Festivals in the country.

Will Foster, Dean of Staffordshire at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We are continuing to build on our presence in the Staffordshire area and we’ll be offering courses in city and town locations with partner institutions from September this year.

“As well as sponsoring first prize at the recent Staffordshire Open Art Exhibition held at Shire Hall and supporting the forthcoming Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards in July we have offered support to enable Stafford Festival Shakespeare to put on its boldest production yet.

“Our Faculty of Arts team has also been working with local secondary schools, King Edwards and Walton High, to deliver musical workshops as part of an educational programme with a view that the schools will be doing pre-show performances at the festival.”
