Telford £10 million engineering investment takes shape

The new £10 million development at the Telford Innovation Campus is taking shape. The construction project, which started in April 2016, is part of the University of Wolverhampton’s £250 million Our Vision, Your Opportunity investment plan.
The University is investing in advanced, new engineering facilities and enhanced courses in response to the regional and national shortage of qualified engineering graduates, focusing on providing students with access to technology at the forefront of engineering developments.
New courses including BEng (Hons) Motorsport Engineering, BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering and BEng (Hons) Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering will be complemented by specialist equipment: a design and visualisation facility, wind tunnels, engine test facilities, 3D printing facilities, and laboratories dedicated to electronics and telecommunications, metrology and materials testing research.
Professor Ian Oakes, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We’re really pleased with the progress at Telford Innovation Campus and it’s exciting that the building is beginning to take shape. The £10 million investment in new facilities and a range of engineering courses is creating a lot of interest with applications up considerably on last year and aerospace, in particular, seeming to be very popular with students looking for higher education courses.
“This substantial investment in enhanced provision and expanded facilities demonstrates our commitment to providing the next generation of skilled engineers. Our new courses combine activity based learning and live industrial project work with a real focus on creativity and employability.”
Hannah Kelsall, RIBA Part II Architectural Assistant at Associated Architects who designed the redevelopment, said: “We are very pleased to see how fast the scheme is growing up and out of the ground, and anticipate that it will offer a significant new hub at the heart of the Engineering Building for both existing and prospective students, as well as staff and potential sponsors. Both the project team and the University are working hard to ensure the scheme is delivered to its full potential and we are keen to see the University’s engineering programmes thrive in this exciting new space.”
