Partnership sparks new Black Country learning legacy

The University of Wolverhampton has partnered with Black Country Living Museum (BCLM) to spark local interest in learning about the region through a new education programme.

The IgnitED Programme, which has been sponsored by the University, is offering a series of courses, workshops and talks at the Museum which covers traditional Black Country trades. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the rich artistic and industrial heritage of the region, and gain hands-on experience of traditional Black Country trades from metalworking and stonemasonry to rag-rugging and jewellery making.

Geoff Layer, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Wolverhampton, said:  “We’re really pleased to be partnering with Black Country Living Museum by sponsoring their exciting new learning programme.

“The University has long established roots in the Black Country and we’re committed to ensuring that its heritage is protected and shared through a dedicated learning legacy. It’s really important that the skills which shaped our local industries and communities are kept alive and what better place to do it than at the Black Country’s most famous local attraction in a setting which reflects our traditional history.”

Fashion & Textiles students will be showcasing their work on recycling vintage clothing and the School of Architecture and Built Environment will be sharing their construction skills and uncovering some of the hidden secrets of Black Country buildings.

Mel Weatherley, Head of Learning at Black Country Living Museum: “We are delighted to be delivering this project in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton. The programme will give local people the opportunity to find out more about their industrial heritage, try their hand at traditional Black Country crafts, and have fun learning new skills with family and friends. It is our aim to provide a rewarding experience with the opportunity to develop new hobbies, socialise and make new friends.”
