Former student moves in the direction of film success

University of Wolverhampton Video and Film Production graduate, Andrew Webber, is moving in the right direction by setting up his own film and broadcasting company after receiving a string of accolades for his directorial film debut.

Andrew Webber, originally from Birmingham, graduated in 2007 and is an award-winning film editor who has been accredited for numerous reality, factual programming and feature films which have been broadcast all over the world.

He recently screened his multi-award nominated short film, Second Wind, across selected cinemas in Birmingham and the Black Country. The film – nominated for awards at Portobello Film Festival, Africa International Film Festival, Movie Video Screen Awards and selected at the Jamaica Film Festival as well as the Black International Film Festival – was shot across locations in Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

Starting his career as a Production Assistant Intern for Channel 4, Andrew became Senior Editor for a number of independent media companies and broadcast channels and has worked on shows like Channel 4’s Come Dine with Me and BBC Eastenders E20.

Andrew said:  “The University has been extremely supportive, through my studies and after graduation. It helped me to facilitate my dream of working in TV and film.

“I returned home to the West Midlands to produce ‘Second Wind’ for many reasons; I wanted to direct a film with a universal story based here, featuring actors with regional accents rather than focusing on London where the majority of the TV and film industry is centralised.”

Tracy McCoy, Head of Department of Film, Media and Broadcasting in the Faculty of Arts, said: “We are so proud of Andrew’s achievements and we’re delighted that the course gave him a good, solid grounding to pursue a career in TV and film production.

“We’re really pleased that Andrew keeps in touch with us and he’s keen to guest lecture where he comes along to speak to the university’s School of Media students and gives advice on how to succeed in the industry.”
