Experts support youth entrepreneurship in Africa

Young entrepreneurs in Africa are set to benefit from enterprising insights from University of Wolverhampton experts.

Academics from the Centre for African Entrepreneurship and Leadership (CAEL) are working on a joint initiative to develop a National Youth Entrepreneurship Strategy for countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

CAEL was invited by The Commonwealth and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to present at a recent policy workshop hosted by the South African Government in Johannesburg.

CAEL’s director, Dr Paschal Anosike, was an invited speaker and panellist at the event and provided an assessment of the lessons learnt, the opportunities and the challenges of youth entrepreneurship in Africa.

Dr Anosike said: “One of the key highlights of the event was the opportunity for the University to launch new partnerships with The Commonwealth stakeholders on the subject of youth entrepreneurship education in Africa.”

Present at the workshop were senior government representatives from Ministries of Labour, Youth Development, Trade and Industry as well as experts, NGOs, Universities in Africa, business owners and young African entrepreneurs. Countries represented included Bostwana, Cameroun, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Swaziland.

CAEL was formally launched a year ago, with participants from governments, institutions and the higher education sector across Africa.
