Lifetime achievement award for humanities graduate

A University of Wolverhampton graduate with a passion for languages is celebrating after receiving a lifetime achievement award.
Nigel Pearson received the accolade from the German Embassy at the annual German Teacher Award Ceremony held in London. The awards recognise outstanding achievements by teachers of German in primary and secondary schools in the UK.
The 60-year-old, who now lives in Macclesfield, graduated from the then Wolverhampton Polytechnic with a BA (Hons) in Humanities in 1978.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises Nigel’s work in secondary, middle and primary schools and as a primary languages consultant for CILT, the national centre for languages.
Nigel, who currently teaches German from nursery to year 6 at Leighton Academy Crewe, said: “I felt delighted and honoured to win this award. I like to promote contact and friendships between our countries.
“I have, following getting my Humanities degree at Wolverhampton, spent several years teaching English in Germany and then many years teaching German in England. My degree has helped me immensely. It kindled a love for languages and German in particular, and we had a year's placement abroad as part of our studies. This was a wonderful opportunity to really learn the language, gain practical teaching experience, make new friends and gain also valuable insights into the country and culture.
“I have very fond memories of my time at Wolverhampton. We all got on well and had some really brilliant teaching.”
The award also recognised Nigel’s enthusiasm for promoting German and writing the German QCA schemes of work, as well as taking primary school children to Germany for visits and joint curriculum projects.
He led the award-winning primary German centres of excellence in Liverpool for four years.
The 13th annual German Teacher Awards recognised outstanding achievements by teachers of German in primary and secondary schools in the UK. The recipients received a personal prize of £750 and a certificate to honour their commitment to modern language teaching.
