New course will enable University to train paramedics

A new paramedic qualification is being launched by the University of Wolverhampton with the support of West Midlands Ambulance Service.

Demand for the Diploma of Higher Education Paramedic Science programme, which is due to start in April, is expected to be high.

The course will equip students with the skills to become a professional paramedic and prepare them to work with people who need emergency care, often in challenging circumstances.

Course leader Peter Gregory said: “There is a huge demand for this course and we’re very pleased to be able to offer 20 places to students. We already have a skills lab and simulation equipment used by our nursing students so we have some excellent facilities available.

“We have worked closely with West Midlands Ambulance Service and they will be providing us with work placements for our students. We will also be offering hospital and hospice placements to give them a wider experience.”

On completion, students will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a paramedic. This will enable them to apply for a paramedic post in any NHS or private ambulance service.

A Paramedic Science Open Day will take place on 26 January from 4.30pm – 7pm at Walsall Campus in the Sister Dora building for those interested in finding out more.
