20/01/2015

New £300,000 teaching facilities aimed at equipping the pharmacists of tomorrow with hands-on experience have opened at the University of Wolverhampton.Pharmacy Lab

Existing facilities at the City Campus Molineux site in Wolverhampton have been refurbished to create the new Pharmacy Practice Suite.

The aim is to create a multi-functional learning environment which simulates what students will encounter when they enter practice.

Students on the University’s MPharm and Independent Prescribing courses will start using the new facilities from this month.

The refurbished area features eight clinical bays where ‘hands-on’ learning will take place including one-to-one interaction with simulated patients. This will also include physical assessment of patients, such as eye, ear and abdominal examinations.

The space will be used to equip undergraduate students with real-time problem solving skills when dealing with medical problems. This may take the form of phone consultations with doctors, medical information retrieval exercises through the use of online resources and counselling and consultation skills when providing information to patients.

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) recently awarded the University full accreditation for the next six years for the Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree course.

Professor of Pharmacy Practice Paul Rutter said: “We believe this new facility will provide excellent teaching facilities to meet the educational needs of students preparing for their role as pharmacists.

“We will also use the space for outreach activity and engaging with pharmacy stakeholders. The suite has conference call facilities to allow for better communication with our research collaborators.”

The total cost of the refurbishment is £300,000. The project was designed by Building Surveyors Faithful and Gould and the works undertaken by Bow Construction.
